About: Seaweed Candle

Today marks 4 years and 300+ Seaweed Candles out in the world. Here’s a look at where it started and how it’s going.

‘Still Scared of Seaweed’… something that proved to be more universal than expected. The phrase was born in Ontario, far-far away from any ocean. It came from a tiny lake, in my youth, when our boat engine would ‘conveniently’ cut-out right over the weed bed. The strands of ‘weeds’ that crawled to the surface were from a different world.

Fast forward a few years and I found myself on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Power-outages are a winter norm and candles are a necessity. Having experience with mould-making and 3D printing, I started messing around with the idea of how I could make a candle. The candle was to be graphic and functional. Developing what wax to use, the size of wick, and how to get those letters air-bubble free took a lot of troubleshooting.

Can you smell the wax? The beeswax comes straight out of that hive over there. The smell of 30+ LBS of wax, makes the long drive worth it.

The universality and unique perspectives are what keeps the ‘Seaweed’ line afloat. I’ve heard countless stories from marine biologists, surfers, lake swimmers and so-on. The common denominator seems to be the nostalgic relationship to water and the unknown that it possesses.

Moving forward, the candle has matured into a mainstay. More importantly, it led me to new and exciting processes in ‘small scale manufacturing’. Developing new products takes time but the hope is that all of my products can be as timeless as these candles. So stay tuned on some new products that will compliment these in the future.
